As teachers prepare for their back-to-school return many questions remain of how they will continue as facilitators of knowledge by avoiding the label of being a racist. Schools and teachers are under greater scrutiny to maintain an environment that is conducive for children of all ethnicities. Teachers can prepare for back-to-school avoidance of the racist label by utilizing the Raccelerate Racism Formula.
How will the Raccelerate Racism Formula help teachers as they return back-to-school to avoid the racist label?
The United States Department of Education Office of Civil Rights uses discipline as the first barometer to determine if a school or teachers are racist. In 2014, the United States Department of Education Office for Civil Rights received a record-high 9,989 complaints from people who felt they or others had been discriminated against by a public school or other organizations that receive funding from the education department. The department has also made it easier for concerned citizens to file civil rights complaints online.
The Obama administration is intensifying efforts to reduce discrimination by authorizing a Civil Rights Data Collection project with the intent on enabling parents to record any discipline that is delved out for any child. The effort of both the Obama administration and the United States Department of Education are intensified due to the following staggering discipline statistics.
According to the article, President Obama’s Plan to Revamp Discipline in Schools, there were 3.5 million students who were suspended during the 2011-2012 school year. The United States Department of Education reported that an additional 3.5 million students received in school suspensions as well as another 130,000 were expelled from school.
Since the barometer for racism in schools is discipline, the Raccelerate Racism Formula will help teachers to consider a back-to-school alternative disciplinary strategies to ensure that they remain under the racism radar.
How will utilizing the Reaccelerate Racism Formula as a back-to-school strategy impact the classroom?
Teachers discriminate against students by implementing differential discipline. Teachers with high percentages of Black students in their classroom are more likely to use an authoritarian classroom management approach.
Teachers react to Black student learning experiences that are in opposition to traditional public schools by determining Blacks are incapable of following simple rules and therefore make rules that they deem intolerable. Teachers justify their actions with the belief that these Black students want to be disciplined and have some order in their lives.
Teachers spend more time looking for possible misbehavior by Black students, especially males, and are more prone to respond to Black student behavior by using severe punishments that include corporal punishment and suspensions.
The usage of the Raccelerate Racism Formula will provide an opportunity for teachers and Black students to develop positive classroom relationships. Positive relationships at schools and in the classroom are the prerequisites for effective learning and behavior. Students and teachers who are warm, compassionate, and friendly toward one another in the classroom have the potential to improve instruction and learning.
Developing positive relationships with students provides benefits for schools, teachers, and students. Having positive and caring relationships in schools increases resilience and protects children from academic failure, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, and destructive behavior and violence. Long-term teacher-student relationships result in increased teacher job satisfaction. Teachers who have positive feelings toward their students are more likely to have students reciprocate those positive feelings. Teachers who develop positive and personal relationships with students may prevent psychological development problems in their students. Students are more willing to develop positive relationships with teachers who tend to form close friendships with their students. Children who have positive feelings regarding teachers have favorable classroom behavior which ultimately impacts student achievement.
It is important that teachers consider alternative back-to-school disciplinary strategies so that students will feel comfortable and at ease in the classroom and in the school.
